Lift is a type of vertical transport equipment that efficiently moves people or goods between floors (levels, decks) of a building, vessel or other structures in a vertical (almost vertical) direction. Vertical direction is chosen because the reverse movement of the lift uses gravity. Lifts were first simple rope or chain hoisting devices. Basically, a lift is a simple machine, a platform, mechanically pulled or pushed. A modern lift consists of a cabin (also called “cage”) moving in an enclosed space called “shaft” or “lifting route”. In the past, lifts were driven by steam and water hydraulic pistons. Electric lift cabins are pulled by rolling steel ropes using a pulley and a counterweight.
